This follows from a very brief posting last weekend asking if anyone knew where the fuel/water drain plug is on a mk7 T280 - answer suggested by Tel. Anyway, turns out that what I thought was the plug from that thread wasn't, and this afternoon I had a proper look and found it. Drained it, lost a bit of diesel at the same time like you do, put it back and thought all should be well.

Ran for a few moments until it hit the airlock, which I was expecting, then I thought I'd jusy need to crank it over a few times until it drew through. Nah. After a few cranks the damn thing's gone into some bizarre electronic protection mode going 'something's wrong!, something's wrong!' with the master warning light on, and refuses to attempt to do anything at all when you turn the key.

I can see the fuel in the pipe, I can see the air....but even if I drain it through it's still not going to turn over until whatever sensor it is gets reset!

Homestart on their way.............. :driving:

Well sadly, recovery have just been and gone again, looks like it's a main dealer job. Something bizarre to do with the immobiliser having sensed so many 'false starts' it's now locked out the fuel pump. It actually started briefly on the driveway whilst attempting, and all the fuel is now drawn through, so I know it's something really annoying rather than fatal!

Either way, can't see me getting to a job tomorrow. :(

The joys of modern vehicles!, used to have a priming lever on the fuel pump on my old Land Rover.

My old Series 2 still came with a cranking handle!

have you tried googling a forum for that vehicle?I did when I had a problem with my Volvo and had a solution in minutes that did not involve a main dealer and the surgical removal of my right arm, worth a try mate!

I'm assuming it will be a computer reset.

Just needs a bleed and a code clear, probably no electric lift pump on it, needs fuel all the way to the injection pump to function. Just needs to be bleed to this point. And too many non starts and the ecu's can't understand whilst the engine hasn't started so its probably gone into limp mode.

If you change a filter on a modern diesel and can't bleed it you can usually get around it by starting it with your foot on the floor boards, it will run on the fuel already in the pump and the high RPM's should drag fuel up, if you're lucky!

Well that was my thinking too! Don't even think it needs a bleed as there's fuel all through the pipe, just a code issue.

I'll have you all know right now, there's nowt else 'limp' in the Rocking camp.

:driving: All back on the road again - phew! Was exactly what Drew said - there was an air block on the RETURN (common rail) and all the codes needed resetting.

So I asks the question: "Was it something I did wrong?" "Not really", came the answer, "It's almost impossible to do self-service on ANY bit of these anymore except for topping the oil".

So a £63 lesson in how not to believe the yellow bits!
