On a rewire of a 1900's flat
what I think is the incoming bt line- its a old looking grey 2core 1mm cable (looks like bell cable)

was going to have my master here- then run 2x cat5 cables from here to 2 slaves.

before place gets plastered- thought it be a good idea to test it before place is plastered

purchased:
http://www.screwfix.com/p/mk-1--mas...99390156c974&gclid=CP_njo-S1c0CFSsz0wodkO4DHQ

the 2 core grey cable has no colour indications- so tried it in it 2 and 5 terminals (there isn't a a and b??)

either way I put in around in 2 and 5 with a phone plugged it- it just has a ingaged tone!

any help would be great

get your mulimeter on the pair. should read approx 48V d.c. it'spossible that the phone line is down, either cut off or faulty.

Can you still dial out? It could be the phone lines set up for 1571 service and the engaged tone is to indicate there is a message. measure the voltage, should be around 50V DC.

Edit: Tel beat me to it

should be a pulsing dial tone if there are 1571 messages.

left now! but will do on monday

if the line is healthy etc- is what I done right and is that the correct master?
Some have the back bit for the incoming connections- then the top what goes on top of that where the slave connections go

you could just wire it like a radial to make second fixing easier. old telephones require the orange in 3 as well for a ring.

Waste of time these days all of the newer adsl / VDSL i-plate filters fitted to the nte5 master disconnect the ring circuit to reduce the line interference that affects broadband speed

Hum... on 2nd fix don't connect up your slaves until you have the BT incoming line confirmed, or Mr BT may be sending you a nasty bill.

Short circuit across the pair will give you engaged tone. Check for that, could be line fault back towards exchange.

Your old grey cable may be past it's best before date as BT now use a black dropwire if the grey incoming BT cable is to be plastered in the I would suggest you get BT into confirm it is ok before you plaster or install a conduit so you can route a new incoming cable to your master location. The old grey cable insulation is a known failure point on overhead incomers and can affect call quality and broadband speed

To avoid future problems and BT costs you would be better off using an BT NTE 5 master https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Telephones_and_Accessories_Index/NTE5/ as the design allows disconnection of the extensions and gives a test point to verify the incoming line when faults occur
The MK master you have has IDC connecters which only reliably accept 2 cables so your cabling configuration with three cables to terminate may cause problems if you use it

As its a flat it could have a big multi pair cable coming in to a plant/switch room and internal wiring to the flat up a riser. might be worth trying to follow the route back if possible.

Just popped in there today tested between the 2 cores and got 48vdc
and but a nte5 master (one with a and b terminals) on instead of the mk master
-but still engaged tone- tried dialing my mobile- but still just engaged tone

Just two flats in one property- up/down- i am in the upstairs- cable comes in by window from up by roof- looks like it just comes directly from pole...

Get the customer to phone BT and report a line fault.

you first need to contact your provider. this may not be BT. ( coud be talk talk or EE for example ). they can then test the line and if faulty, they report it to BT. BT will not action on a fault for a non-BT subscriber except via the service provider.

Am I being silly here!
I am rewiring the flat for the owner who has just bought it (renovating it- to sell/rent it out)
how do phone lines work (I still live with parents!) - does it get cut when the old owners move out- then the new owner have to get bt to re-instate it? hence the engaged tone at the mo?

I would say if the flat has been sold and vacated , there is a better than good chance that the previous subscriber has closed the account.

probably cut off when old occupants left. that means choosing a provider then they will reinstate the service.

OK, one more tip .Don't go buying electric cards to get the juice on empty properties unless you know you will get the money back from the owner.
You could end up paying a massive amount of emergency payments from the previous occupiers before you get the juice on.

stay where you are as long as the folks put up with you. it's a jungle out here, mortgage/rent/TV licence/sky subs/ house insurance etc.etc. . do your own washing and cooking. don'tmove out till you find a good woman of independent means who is also a good cook.

how do I 'confirm' this lol!

havn't done much bt tbh....

You don't.

Its down to the owner .... get them to talk to BT

As I stated earlier in the thread, don't go connecting any extra points until BT (or who ever) have confirmed the line is working and OK.
