So, my oldest son moved out yesterday into an apartment complex and he asked me what a particular outlet was. There were several of them throughout the apartment and they were all located on the wall about a foot from the ceiling. I thought it might be some sort of smoke sensor, but they also had smoke detectors throughout. I told him the apartment complex was probably watching them, he didn't think it was too funny. In all seriousness though, any idea what this is? Perhaps an apartment wide emergency announcement system of some sort?

is it an old, maybe disused, sounder for doorbell where the entrance has separate bell pushes for each apartment.?

If it's still in use and important then the complex management should have given instructions for it or there should be instructions within the appartment and there should be a regular test.

Only guessing but;
Sounder / announcer for fire evacuation would be my first choice.
Depending on the age it may be an older smoke detector

After some Googling, it's a common query from new appartment occupiers.

Fire alarm sounder.

Railman could it possibly be a carbon dioxide sensor. Just a thought

Thanks everyone, I do believe it is an alarm for all of the apartments. My guess is the standard fire alarms are to let you know if you have fire/smoke in your unit, but then the outlets that I pictured before are a notification that can be sent out to all units if there is a fire that runs the risk of spreading from unit to unit. I was hoping to find an image of the device with a description of it, but it could be that it is just an old device. Anyhow, thanks again!

I found the link to the Minihorn I posted by using the phrase

apartment fire alarm speaker

(after narrowing it down to that with earlier searches).
Quite few old ones came up, I just chose the Mini as an example.

If you search more, you may find the exact one.
