Any one recommend a decent publication on the basics of installing data cabling to multiple outlets

Have you spent an hour on YouTube there are some good security and networking guys that go through it.

I can't recommend a good publication, but what is it you're wanting to know? I've done quite a bit of it in the past so may be able to offer up some advice.

Cheers I am interested in the process for installing a network and working out what I need for a small hotel I don't really know a lot about gigaswitches, patch panels etc etc
