can someone enlighten me with some info on codes 1 2 3 4 etc

something missing in my training methinks

Hey Lionel.

Code 1 = Requires urgent attention
Code 2 = Requires improvement
Code 3 = Requires further investigation
Code 4 = Does not comply with BS 7671

These codes are applied to any issues found on a periodic inspection and range from very bad i.e Code 1 - access live parts, absence of earthing conductor to Code 4 - no indicator sleeving on switch wires, no circuit schedule at DB.

the thing with these codes is there is some grey areas with regards to what faults have what numbers (the nic man said this) also number 3 codes when investigated will then turn into a 1 2 or 4

Do the codes only apply when carrying out a periodic inspection report??,
and also what do you need to do if you come across a code 1, do you stop everything and make safe etc?..

Hi Dan.

Well the only time you would need to assign a code to an item is when you found it on a PIR and noted it in on the relevant page. If you found a problem whilst carrying out some other work then you could class it as one of the codes and note it in the comments on existing installation box on the EIC/MW you were doing for the work you had carried out.

Ideally yes a code 1 should be rectified straight away without delay.

If I can chip in here, ANY code 1's are an immediate 'unsatisfactory' on a PIR.

An extract from professional electrician Nov 2008

Code 1 REQUIRES URGENT ATTENTION
Indicates immediate danger
The installation is a risk to the user; therefore , the inspector should take appropriate action without delay to remove the danger

Code 2 REQUIRES IMPROVEMENT
This code should be used to indicate that the observed fault requires action to remove Potential danger

CODE 3 REQUIRES FURTHER INVESTIGATION
Indicates that the inspection has revealed an apparent deficiency which could not be fully identified and
should be investigated further

CODE 4 DOES NOT COMPLY
With the current edition of BS7671 but are not deemed a risk to the user
