Customer all paid and up to date, Really very nice people and will pay for second fix, however what would you do now.....

Built extension, planned to be hi spec, inc all underfloor heating, chrome accessories, designer lights, sound and data etc.

First fix done however money has run out.

Please fit these second hand lights, B+Q outside lights, cap off all decking lights, cap off all underfloor circuits, dont fix ensuite or dressing rooms as door to be left shut and rooms unused, use white accesories only and dont change the consumer unit.

So dilema is dont change the C.U 15way at £450.00, all my circuit mods require RCD protection that was due to be done when second fixing the whole job.

Customer still wants C.U changed when has more money to finish the rest of the extension.

I have fitted a front end RCD as a temporary fix, What would you have done, I considered saying no way to energising extension, but nice people and desperate for the work to be done?????

I would have something very documented and signed to say that work is not yet complete.

Nothing more you really can do other than make sure that everything is safe.

On a first fix I have linked switch wires with line connectors and enclosures and the circuit can only be switched off at the temp board. This situation is slightly different though as it is unoccupied and loads of work still going on.

You will have to document EVERYTHING to make sure your arse is well an truly covered:thumbsup

Agree^^^
Nice people may not always have the money, just gently check first on available 2nd fix budget (sorry).

Fit a temporary garage CU and connect in just your circuits from the extension, only if they are not part of existing circuits. Remove and terminate cables you fitted that are not to be used as far away as possible and label appropriately. Do emphasise that anything that needs to be energised must be safe and appropriately tested as a minimum. Don't cut corners on safety, leave unenergised circuits in preference.

Not a good situation, but do make sure you are doing the work safely and legally.
Good luck, hope they manage to get the money soon to complete.

Invoice them for labour and materials to date

Give them a certificate that details the works are tempoary and are not complete, job done.

I wouldn't have connected the new circuits until I had a new consumer unit in
I would have said "No problem- let me know when you want the consumer unit done and I will connect, test and certify the new works", and (as said earlier) I would invoice to date at same time

T****** don't have the money either, they just let you 2nd fix then tell you, at least they have been honest.

I can understand not being able to finish everything if they have messed up their budget, but £450 for the most important bit of kit?
I would explain that I understand that certain things will be completed later, but the CU must be done now as a matter of urgency.
Doesn't matter how nice they are, you have been commissioned to do a specific job safely and they need to understand this. I find it strange that people who have run out of money often still manage to go on holiday or change their car shortly after.

Can't see the problem with a frontend RCD personally.

Tough call but, I would agree with Risteard WRT the front end RCD. Explain to them you must offer RCD protection to your new circuits and whilst not ideal this is the cheapest way out as a temporary measure.

Also as said, make sure you have a precise paper trail.
