Hi all,

Could somebody tell me how to supply 2 double sockets and a light to a garage across a garden lawn (approx 5m)? The CU in the house has no RCD protection but has space for more MCBs.
Do you need to use 2 SWA cables (one for light and 1 for power) or use 1 to go to a secondary CU in garage?

Sorry if questions sound dopey!!!!
Cheers

I think the best way to add power would be to take SWA from your existing board off a new MCB, then inside the garage add a RCD 2 way board like this one here: Wylex 2-Way Metal RCD Garage Consumer Unit - Screwfix.com, Where the Trade Buys

Don't forget though you need to bury the cable at least 700mm under grass and add warning tape over the top of the cable before re burying

You also need to take into account the load you expect to be used and also the length of SWA used. A good calculator is here: Cable Size Selector Calculator and online cable selector for electricians keep in mind that 2 double sockets could quite easily use 12KW if you had each at maximum load although for most instances this would be very rare.

I don't mean to sound insulting, but are you a qualified electrician? I believe any work on new circuits need to be notified and also would be subject to inspection by your loocal council unless you are in an approved electrician scheme.

Hope this helps

Thanks, yes, I know about burying it, I think it's 500mm though.
I am a newly qualified domestic installer but have never actually installed any SWA.
Yes, have seen these garage units, deffo the way to go.

Cheers

Hi

Buried cables shall be at a sufficient depth to avoid being damaged by any reasonably foreseeable disturbance of the ground. About 600mm for the cable or 450mm if you use ducting should do it, depending and use of ground. Eskimo I would be surprised if the regs book gives you a depth if it does please put the reg on here.
Regards
