Not wanting to high jack this thread fellas, but just wanted an opinion on something.

There's been a couple of discussions tonight regarding gobby members, arms members and gobby arms members.. you get the idea.

Now I eyeballed the tilers forum earlier after the 500,00th post announcement on here and I noticed that some users have a 'trusted adviser' as well as an 'arms member' with their user names.
I was wondering as to weather a similar thing might be worth recognition on this forum. My main reasoning for this is many threads now are being swamped with a mixture of interpretations and opinions, which may be a good thing, however a lot of bickering and slagging off seems to occur.
When I scan through a thread, I know who's posts I will read. I know who I trust as I have the benefit of their prior contributions from all my previous time on here. However new members wanting genuine advise are unaware of who is who here and so can only go on their initial experience.. take this thread from earlier as an example of my point.

I'm thinking maybe people could be considered as 'trusted advisers' according to an overall assessment of their contributions, and possibly time of membership and post count. It could be carried out by mods in the first instance and then mods and existing trusted advisers further down the line..

I'm not trying to say one person is better than the other, but I honestly feel that the Arms is no longer limited to users who try to do what's best for this community.

This would get my vote!

I'm a member of the tilers forum (0 posts BTW) and their system of classing members should be taken up by JIB, its that good. Mods and admin would hate implementing this great idea but its worth it. I could list s dozen arms members to by classed as a 5 star advisor, yourself included Widdler (but not me, I don't even class myself in the same league). This would be a clear indication of who is giving the advice, hopefully it won't turn out to be a competition on who's got the biggest knob. It's a great idea Widdler, what do the admin say? (looks like I'm having a go at the admin tonight but its not international).

Back to the original point: there have always been gobby new members, usually with an axe to grind, telling us we're not all that. As the forum gets more popular that will only increase.
As much as I'm against 'feathers in caps' I think a 'trusted member' scheme would be a good idea - I could name several members who I generally agree with and would accept their advice but new members wouldn't know who they are. This shouldn't be any kind of graded system though.
Currently for new members seeking advice the only real indication is that the person giving advice is an arms member, but as I've just mentioned in another thread in the arms, even that is potentially flawed.

It's not only new members, theirs a particular respected member that works abroad that is peeing people off at the moment. But I know what you mean ken, a clip around the lug is needed some times.

I thought I disguised the p-ing off of people pretty well.:shocked3: IMO I think if some come on here gobby then I try and let them dig their own holes to fall into, asking for reg numbers is one of my favourites of trying to sort a few out, especially when you see the immortal line

"it's against the regs"

It's not you Malcolm BTW. I've been walking away from his posts for a month now ever since he had a go at SMB and SMB has never been back on the forum. I might start using the "add to ignore" function, it blocks that persons posts from you seeing it although you can see the rest of the thread.

ok after the first 2 pages of justified bitching the trusted member idea is a good one. I have seen some of the guys just reying to shout loudest to be right a weel sit back and watch them crash

Things like you mention Widdler bring cliques into forums. Then its a case of if you don't agree with the clique your not accepted. It goes on atm.

This thing was stated in the rules by Dan.

Don't mock newbies to the trade
Don't mock timed served

This is the main issue here. People stating others aren't electricians and so on.

I have a personal belief that I have been marked by certain members and Mods in a clique on here because of my bold.

This type of thread should be shut down because its singling people out and mods are keeping them open.

We could have so called advisors but sometimes advice on the forum isn't just a single line of text with no explanation. It goes a bit deeper than that and i don't think it would be a good idea to just have purely academic advice. Some of the Q's also need practical advice and not just a quick quote from the xyz regs. A couple of examples of how to use this advice in the real world maybe more the thing to go for. Personally i think it would be better to have a few of the more respected members contributing to more of a hands on type answer. There seems to be a lack of practical work in the training centres these days. IMO parrot fashion learning of regs is not going help you out there in the real world of being a sparky at whatever level.
Some people give great answers to question some with humour some from straight behind the desk it all helps but don't make anyone any better than anyone else.

That is why you have things called harmonisation.

You'll never get rid of the juice takers, they will always be around. Best just to ignore, it hurts them a lot more when they go unnoticed.

Actually, aren't there a few gobby old members on here!

Tin hat on, off to open a bottle of red!
