Welcome to the asylum mate.

Hi and welcome. :)

Oooh I bet you see loads of John Deere tractors, I have a weird thing about them haha, not sure why!

Split phase is used in the countryside where the farms were connected to the grid during the farm electrification scheme many years ago. They where supplied from 2 wire overhead 11kv dropped to 240v 2 wire with a local transformer which was fine to start with but as equipment became bigger the DNO had to upgrade supplies and as the HV is only 2 wire they decided to provide two 240v lives 180 deg apart.
lots of farms are still like this due to the costs of reconductoring miles of HV line, most new grain driers and grain processing equipment is 3 phase so we install diesel generators to provide a supply just when the equipment is in use.

See loads of them, my big problem with them is they are always left in my way and they keep on changing how you operate the new ones so I get in to move one and have to work it out.
