Help on what a question is asking off me

Hey, so I've been given this question :

Describe, with the aid of diagrams, a network configuration that could be using to connect a programmable controller system. To do this task, select one PLC network configuration that is commercially used on a typical PLC distributed system.

I'm a bit confused to what is being asked of me, is the network configuration a type of topology so for example could i describe a star topology network? or is this to do with something else?

I think they will most probably mean something like Profibus.

well one of the reasons this question got me confused is because the next question is:

For the network configuration chosen in task b above, describe the protocols and communication standard used, include in your answer an outline of the advantages and disadvantages of this network.

From my study material that I've been provided with it mentions that both ContolNet and DeviceNet are with in the Fieldbus family which is a communication protocol, this next question also asks to describe the communication protocols. am I missing some thing hear or getting something wrapped around my head?
