Thanks for letting me in. 65+ retired. Keen amateur sparker for many years. Just coming to the end of a lengthy de-wire, re-wire of a 90 y old property. Back, knees, elbows etc feeling their age. Crawling under floors and over loft joists has lost its charm. Battering back box holes in granite -like bricks - less said.
The sights I have seen under the floors would give anybody nightmares. Plenty of spares added to ring circuit via uninsulated, non-enclosed terminal blocks. A cupboard light wired with two core bell wire from the back of a socket, no fuse of course. At build in the 20s, one light switch had been raggled from another with lead-covered cable. The fabric insulation was perished and would seem to have been causing the 5A fuse to blow, rightly. Problem had been solved by 'upgrading' the fuse wire to 30A. I think my favourite was the earth 'connection' inside the immersion heater switch box. The grub screw had gone completely awol and the earth wires were helpfully not quite in contact with the box.
There was no equipotential bonding present - anyone know when this was introduced?
Would love to wire up the new board, but of course have to hand the best bit over to a pro.
