Got my AM2 coming up in August. I have done my apprenticeship through JTL who have been telling me for the past year not to worry about the AM2S and I only need to do the standard AM2.

I have today found out I have to sit the AM2S as apparently now it is required for the gold card and I am worried and a bit ----ed off as I have not even touched plastic/metal conduit at all throughout my apprenticeship and apparently am required to perform bends and sets perfectly down to the mm in the AM2S. If this is the case then they may as well just fail me now as I work for domestic company who don’t even undertake this sort of work so there’s no way to learn it.

Any ideas? I feel like just paying to do the standard AM2 out of my own pocket as I am confident in everything except conduit.

Both will involve conduit installation. Your employer has certain obligations to fulfill when taking on an apprentice, one of which involves enuring adequate training and conduit installation is a core part of an electrical apprenticeship.

Have you spoken to your employer about this? They may farm you out another company for experience.

One question I have is how you managed to complete your NVQ portfolio, without evidence of conduit installation?

Unless it's a 1 man band I'd find it highly unlikely that there isn't at least 1 person who's done conduit that can get you started on it.

You can do a write up to fill out the missing parts of your NVQ. Pretty much the only thing I haven’t touched is conduit so I’ve done simple things like 90 bends and threading/running couplers but to do a bubble or set mm perfect on the am2s I’m going to struggle with

It's part of AM2 and AM2s. with the difference between the two being a slightly different allocation of time permitted for completion.

People I’ve spoke to who have passed their AM2 told me there was no conduit involved at all. I get so many conflicted views online too. My JTL officer has suggested I do a 2 day ‘taster course’ before I sit my AM2 as apparently they basically tell me everything I need to do but this would come out of my own pocket - not sure how much it is or if it’s even worth it

Would the 'taster course' be more expensive than re-sitting? Unless it's considerably cheaper, I'd be inclined to take my chances.

I’m not sure, I feel like my JTL officers are always in a hurry to get off the phone so getting the correct info is hard at the best of times.

Also I don’t pay for the AM2 and I think they also pay for a resit if I needed it. They have also booked my 18th edition course which is coming up soon which I also need to think about 🤣

How much would it cost to re-sit and how much does this taster course cost?
Resit would cost me nothing as I think my apprenticeship providers pay for the first resit. This refresher course is an option but not standard with the apprenticeship so I would have to pay out of my own pocket - no idea how much it is or what it involves he just told me it’s a 2 day AM2 taster course
