Discuss Labour "reshuffle" in the Electricians Chat - Off Topic Chat area at ElectriciansForums.net

O

Octopus

Is it me or is this just like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic?

So how long will Jeremy Corbyn hang on before the knives come out? My money is on the day after the local elections in 2016!

But then who will take over?

A shambles because what ANY democracy needs is effective opposition!

EDIT: Just heard about the 3 resignations - so will it be tomorrow??

My grandad would be spinning in his grave if he could see the state of the labour party. Being pitmen a vote for anything else was countermard to treason.

Just wonder after blundermand stepped down and there were 500k new labour party members enrolled, how many were tories, to make sure Corbyn got in and therefore making Labour virtually unelectable??

Under the rules put in place by Ed Milliband!

3 nomarks spit their dummies and quit.... diddums.

Progress are the real infiltrators of Labour, funded by the Sainsbury family to turn Labour into a neoliberal Tory light party. Good to see Labour being reclaimed to something at least vaguely resembling the policies that most of the country actually wants to see if we cut through the media rubbish.

It's a very odd world where a leader who's been responsible for doubling the membership in the space of 6 months can still be described as unpopular and unelectable by those whose policies had lost 2 elections and halved the membership level.

If this carries on I may yet be able to even end up voting Labour without having to hold my nose too much.

I do agree with the railways being in public hands, the cost of rail is ridiculous compared to Europe.

And of course the scrapping of tuition fees, a higher minimum wage is desirable but at what costs. It would be achievable in a perfect world, but unfortunately is it possible in this real world. He proclaims that this would be funded by taxing the 150K+ earners at 50%, that is well and good. But what about lower to middle earners? If the minimum wage was say £11 an hour, what would a sparks want, £20-25. What would a mechanic want the same and on it would go up the scale for every job that is now above the minimum wage and who would pay for it, is there enough money to do all this.

I'm a great believer in tax credits to be honest, but only for 2-3 children. If you want a large family then you should have to pay for it yourself, not the country. It was a natural progression that Victorians had more children because of the infant death rate, birth control etc. but once that dropped, education improved families where having 8+ children, the economical factors degreed that large families were not sustainable and they became a rarity not the norm and by the middle of the 20th century we had the norm of 2.4 children. Now we are going back to big families because the state pays for this, this has to stop.

Housing I agree with. I grew up in a miners mansion and then my mother had a council house. Maggie decided on finance again to sell off the council stock which I didn't agree with, but it "saved money" to have the occupier own and maintain their own homes. Now there is a chronic shortage of homes. The answer the new "social housing". The problem is with a larger percentage of homes now being privately owned where do you build these "social homes". I know that as soon as a development is mentioned and the use of "social housing" is use, residents object to the builds. They are frightened of depreciating house prices, gangs, and anti social behaviour, that is rightly or wrongly associated with "social housing". So great build more social housing homes, just not near me is the buzz word.

Trident, to be honest the man is a fool for even contemplating scrapping this. Yes if every country in the world had the same values as the UK or Europe then there is no need for atomic weapons. But we are a rarity and there is one group who if they had a nuke would use it...............yes it is revenge solely now, because nukes are no longer De Tente with Daesh, but if they use one I would want us to use 20 to wipe them off the face of the Earth

Yes he does have a few good points and it would be wonderful to get back some or our old fashioned values. But it is no good looking backwards at a bygone age of socialism. Blair nearly had it but lost his way. Labour must evolve and I don't think Corbyn is able to do that.

Funnily enough Thomas Moore wrote Utopia 500 yrs ago the year and we still are looking for it.

Lower to middle earners will see their salaries stagnate even further. Employed sparks have seen their wages hover around the what, £12/15 mark for years now, even agency won't pay a huge amount more. This will only get worse when they have tipsy cleaners and general dogsbodies £8-10 an hour.

And the sell off of council housing that took place also injected a huge amount of personal wealth into the country, and continues to do so. The problem with the whole scenario back then is that the councils didn't use the money they made from the sales to actually build more houses. And the building of more social housing has been hugely lacking in this country for decades.
