I have been researching smoke/heat alarms.Am I correct in stating that every loft extension to a 2 storey house means that a smoke alarm system to GRADE D LD2 MUST be installed as a minimum.

Basically yes.

Although the architect should have marked them on the drawings.

So, one on landing, one in hallway and one heat (if poss) in the kitchen.

Assuming this would be sufficient to be within the max distances.

I havn't seen the drawings or the site yet.But the client has stated that he wants 9 smoke detectors.3 on each floor.LD 2 seems to include principal habitable room so would it be correct if distances and floor sizes are within limits to state.
HEAT DETECTOR IN KITCHEN,
SMOKE DETECTOR GROUND FLOOR HALLWAY,
SMOKE DETECTOR IN PRINCIPLE HABITABLE ROOM
SMOKE DETECTOR FIRST FLOOR LANDING
SMOKE DETECTOR LOFT EXTENSION
is the minimum. If on a site visit the house falls into the large category I can ammend

That looks fine to me.

If you want to make doubly sure, maybe contact the building inspector direct and confirm with him.

You would be surprised at how helpful most of them are nowadays.
