I have 3 ballasts that seem to have blown within a modular compact fluorescent light fixtures located within a suspended ceiling of a shop. I have tried replacing the tubes/starters, so my inclination is that the ballasts are the cause. One modular has all tubes not lighting, the other modular has only 2 tubes lighting.

The fixtures are 4 compact fluorescent tubes, connected by 2 36/18 watt electromagnetic ballasts. The ballast brand is Vossloh Schwabe, and I am having trouble finding a direct replacement, with not many suppliers in the UK.

Q.1) I need to find replacements. After reading up, not sure I should place any other brand in, in fear it is not the correct specification?

Looking at Vossloh Schwabe data sheet.

Vossloh Schwabe L36/40.443 Reference No. 164438

I can find a similar ballast from this wholesaler:

Vossloh Schwabe 36 Watt Ballast

Which is similar but the

is different.

Existing = 65/155
Replacement = 55/140

Q.2) Can anyone explain that to me?

Q.3) I am going to test the lighting to make sure it is the ballast for certain. I will perform continuity, and a soft insulation test between line/neutral? Is this correct?

I am considered an electrical improver, not a fully qualified electrician, if you are wondering.

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

Update:

I tried to contact Vossloh Schwabe through email, no reply. I contacted the wholesaler above, girl on the phone kindly contacted Vossloh Schwabe and told me that the 40 watt is discontinued, so it is basically a newer replacement.

I would appreciate any advice on testing a ballast? My concerns are insulation test, would I have to remove every tube/starter?
