Hi,
As to the cheap ones being any good I don't know. I have one which is about 20 years old, don't use it a lot, but can be useful for checking light levels at desk height in offices etc. I know you should be able to do this by calculation, but it just acts as a double check.
Might bring in some extra work when you say your light levels are far too low, here; have a look at what the meter says!
