Modem and Router help

What’s differences and when would you use one or both?

Like would you need modem and router for CCTV?

Would you need modem and router for data points in house?

As I’m confused of when you’d use just a router or when you’d use both together?

Today, most home broadband services use a combined modem and router. MODEM is short for MOdulatorDEModulator I believe and is the bit that converts data to a signal that can be sent down a telephone line. The router is the part that does all the network data routing.

The exact application will govern what you need.

For IP CCTV, it's most likely you're going to need a broadband modem/router, for an alarm panel notification system a GSM modem may be all that's required.

So for your application data points in a house you are most likely going to need a broadband modem/router, and unless you only want 4 data points, a network switch.

I remember MODEM's being 28kb/s and make an awful screechy noise when they dialled up on the phone line. Took over a minute to download a picture of a pretty girl back when I was a teen.

28k? That was fast. When I first started on Compunet (Commodore 64) it was 1200/75 I did have an acustic modem that you plugged the handset of your phone into but could never get a reliable connection.

A modem and a router can be combined as one uni, your Sky/Virgin box is both, the Modem side connects to the external network the router routes the data its also a basic switch as switches connect to devices on a network together so they can "talk" to each other.

Which bit are you stuck with and as I mentioned in the other thread you are better off with a NVR for the CCTV unless you want to go the Arlo/Nest route.
