The bloke im on about (owner of said firm) was famed for his cheque writing skills whenever anybody either disagreed with him or stood up to him. He was a five foot bully lol. I knew it was on the cards for me as my nose was never brown enough.
I have come across a few like him in my years though and as said some guys just do not get it...I work to live, I do not live to work. Standard stuff.

The hardest, meanest bloke I ever worked for was myself!

Can I not leave things on top of cupboards and filing cabinets as its a heath and safety hazard.

also, one site had a swimming pool. They filled it in and paved over it, because it was too dangerous. Someone might have drowned in it.

and yes I left eventually ;-)

I blame the Yanks for a lot of this shyte. They created a multi-million dollar business out of suing at the drop of a hard at and like a lot of their other shyte it somehow migrated over here.

Have you had any ludicrous requests?

Can I do all paperwork; certs, quotes, etc, in the evening at home, will only take some thing in the region of 6 hours per week......I told myself no but I just would not listen! The joys of self employment!

We were selling a shunting loco to Rutland Railway Centre. “Can you see if the brakes will release?” Sounds a fun afternoon for me and one of the fitters, it had never moved in 5 years as I could think of. It was coupled to a scrap iron carriage, we couldn’t be bothered to get the carriage shifted so left them coupled.

So the fitter crouched at the side of the loco as I unscrewed the hand brake, he shouted “there coming off”. They released OK, I couldn’t get them back on again! We had to go and get another loco to drag them back a ¼ of a mile.

It was the green loco and the iron carriage in this picture.

Overtime road closure last night to investigate a 12m column with a double arm on top that had somehow rotated itself out of it's perpendicular. The aluminium column has a stainless insert to accommodate the bracket arm. This insert is epoxy glued into the column and also has one locator screw. The insert has 4 pre-tapped M10 holes to accept the stainless steel allen key head bolts that secure the bracket arm in correct alignment. These fit in with serrated washers.

Still reading???

Ok, so the only way the arm can move out of alignment is if all four bolts have sheared. Up we go in the bucket and sure enough, that is what has happened. There are huge wind loads on Swansea sea-front. Even some of the aluminium traffic lights have buckled and folded over.

In the office this morning I presented my report only to be informed that i should have bridged the join between bracket arm and column with 'something' and steel banded it on, as 'that has what we have done before'.

I forgot to put in a stores requisition for 'somethings' so I didn't have any. Certainly nothing so robust as withstand the loads applied that had already sheared 4 M10 stainless steel bolts!
