My mate gave me a wall chaser!

Hello all,
Just got a brand new wall chaser (for nothing!!!)
It is the Erbauer one.
Having never used one, could anyone give me a simple crash course on how to use the thing!
Tips on widths and depths of chases for various types of cable would also be much appreciated.

Gently gently is how you go, and down the wall, not up. I listen to the 'tone' of the motor and slow down as soon as it begins to dip, well before the blade jams, which it does frequently on hard brick.

Connect a good vaccuum or you won't be able to see for dust. Use glasses, gloves, earplugs and dustmask.

Mark the wall first so you don't go off track.

You won't be able to get to the top few inches of the wall so there'll be a bit of bolstering to do in any case. The centre bit of the cut will come out nice and easy with a 1" chisel.

Widths? Depends what you're puttin' in the wall. Obviously 20mm or 25mm for conduit, various widths for oval, though I usually just use the 29mm stuff. Use the same width as whatever you put in, that way it can be squeezed in and grips by itself rather than having to nail/clip it in place.

I tried one of these once. It was pretty good at doing the job, but hard to control.

Trying to get a straight chase was near damn impossible for me, due to the vibration of the chaser.

Apart from that one thing, l quite like them, and they do speed up the job, especially when in a rush...

The fallout of dust will make the iceland volcano look like a walk in the park, wouldnt use them in a domestic situation even with a hoover.

I only use mine in unoccupied properties. Far too messy, even with Henry connected to it!
Worth it's weight in gold when renovating old Limestone cottages etc.

Really good for chasing concrete driveways as well . I use mine in occupied houses though I do have enough dust sheets to cover most of southern England and cellophane dust curtains.

very handy they are could of done with one a few weeks back,really hard render on walls,hammer stop chisel sds on there but slow,one good thing to get yourself PAPER THROWAWAY SUIT WITH HOOD,you will thank me for that one trust me,good luck.

Gerry surely you can work that out for your self?

If you are putting in a 6mm cable for a cooker then surely by using the tool you will see for your self how

deep it needs to be ?

Generally speaking you usually have an on button and you press this and it starts .

Or if you are really stuck find out the make and model look on line for instructions or look on you tube

even if it is not the same make and model you will get the gist.

I use a sparky one from screwfix attached to an Erbauer vacuum with power take off. I go up the wall as much as I can, have the discs at their widest which is perfect for slightly squezzing in 25mm oval conduit and use an Armeg channelling chisel, exactly the right width for removing the chase. £120 for the chaser, £80 for the vacuum and £25 for the sds chiselling bit which is strong enough for the last few inches top or bottom of the wall that the chaser can't reach. I use a decent face mask more for the chiselling than the chasing. Long sleeves, gloves are necessary for anything but the softest materials, glasses for everything. I don't like goggles as they steam up. Hope this helps.

I chase up as far as the machine will let me then i finish off the last few inches with a 4.5in angle grinder with a dust extract hood like this one.

I made a concious decision today to time how long it took me to dust sheet a room, cut six chases and then de dust the room (not clear up as would apply whatever you used ) although my arms are hurting from the scutch and bolster that I used yesterday as opposed to today. Quite frankly, it will take at least a week to get the dust out of that room from the channel machine, even with dust sheets the red fllor tiles went from red to grey. The dust even sticks to the walls , brushing them off gives a cloud of fine dust. A scutch and bolster won on time, thats with even not adding in clearing up dust for frankly, three or four attempts. Even with a chasing machine, you still have to scutch out the middle of the channel. For me its no competition. A SDS soon cleared the middle of the chnnel after I had finished with the scutch, and minimal dust.
I suppose it is quite a major point as well, using hand tools doesnt write off a set of clothes for the day either !

i recently got a new metabo 1400watt wall chaser connected to a bosch hoover....all i can say is what a tool! wouldnt be without it now.
