Hi guys,

Anyone hold a NEBOSH certificate, and if so has it been beneficial career wise? I go to London to sit the course and take exam in April/May and will be doing the International course to open more doors elsewhere if necessary.

Just wondered if anyone else has this and how useful they have found it?

Ben

The NEBOSH National General Certificate is a qualification designed to help those with health and safety responsibilities (e.g. managers, supervisors and employee representatives) to discharge more effectively their organisational duties and functions.
I've heard positive results about "nebosh certifications". Good luck. :)

As a SAP (Senior Authorised Person), did my Nebosh last year. It's not difficult, once you get your health n safety head on. It's a general requirement for all our shift team leaders to be Nebosh qualified - Most got the job without the certificate though, and are being trained up. Did the day release course over 3 months as opposed to the 2 week intensive one. This gave you time to read up between weeks and digest what you were tought in class. It's basically death by powerpoint and the hardest part was staying awake all day. By 3pm we were all nodding off! Hopefully you'll get an intersting tutor.

Grant37 it was up the back of beith...literally in the middle of nowhere, for an interview at prestwick, i think they deliberately made it difficult to get to so people wouldnt show as public transport couldnt have got you there

About ten years ago I had an interview with Turners at their office in Govan for a job on an army base in Kosovo.
It was just with one man and he was nice enough and went through all the details and answered all my questions about time off and tax etc.
They even asked how far I had travelled and gave me 25 pence a mile for my travel costs.
The next week they phoned me up and offered me the job and were suprised when I declined and asked why? My response was the money was a disgrace and it might be tax free but I would want much more money to risk my life in a war zone.

I was speaking to somebody the other day and he was telling us that he had about 40 different tickets,...... he said "there's nothing you can tell me about tickets"..here's the ones I remember him telling us....

2391-10
2377-12
2377-11
2377-22
2377-32
2394
2395
Gas safe
17th Edition
NICEIC membership
PASMA
IPAF
COSHH
Asbestos
Confined Spaces
Work at height
NEBOSH manager certificate
CSCS managers card
ECS
Approved person
3 Day first Aid
Abrasive wheels

and there were a load more but I can't remember them as he was using the abbreviated names for them and I was trying to snaffle food while at the same time listening to him having a rant at a few guys that were going on about tickets whilst staying out of it myself but they were all health and safety related......cost his previous employer and himself thousands....

and he is now on........about £9.25 an hour...... :stuart:

I might be the same with the amount of different courses I did to try to get a job,but half of them will be out of date now and I am not renewing any that I have not used.

Well i did the International NEBOSH Cert, TechIosh level 3 one. Wasn't really hitting National law so much, more based around IOL guidelines. I enjoyed it, having done a degree in criminology and being quite accustom to slogging work out, i was surprised at the volume of content and the expectation of quantity during the exams. i wrote over 24 pages by hand across two exams during my course. Hand was like a little monkey paw when i finished.

The cert holds some gravitas in the industry though, and i am glad i did it for sure... although i dont get my results back till July, i am confident i passed.... but many jobs i have looked at specify it as an essential requirement. Think as far as some tickets go, it opens up more doors then some.

It is a bit of a dry course for sure like Jamzie says, beaten to death with a course book 2 inches thick whilst enduring slide after slide after slide of the same common-sensical crap, best bit about the whole course was the buffet at lunch and free coffee and biscuits. .. and the fit receptionist in the hotel.

You wrote over 24 pages by hand across two exams during your course? I thought Nebosh certification were in objective types!

I'm sure it helped me get my current job. I was safety rep cause I had NEBOSH and when duty holder (senior HVAP) position came up I was already part of the safety team so I think that's why I got the nod over someone else. Hard but enjoyable course, 2nd only to the 2391 exam...still gives me a grin when I look at the cert.
