1916 7th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations
1924 8th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations ‘Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Buildings’
1927 9th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations
1934 10th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations
1939 11th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, Revised issue (1943), reprinted with minor amendments (1945), Supplement issued (1946),Revised Section (1948)
1950 12th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations launched, Supplement issued (1954)

2004 Part P of the Building Regulations becomes law • BS 7671:2001 Requirements for Electrical Installations (Incorporating Amendments No 1: 2002 and No 2: 2004), The IEE Wiring Regulations (Sixteenth Edition)
2007 17th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations is scheduled to be issued on January 1st 2008 and comes into effect 6 months later.

So 15 years between the 14th and 15th Regs, and 10 years between the 15th and 16th regs

Why are the updates so frequent now??

PS : I'm after a hard copy of the 14th if anyone wants to sell me a hard copy!

M,

Thanks for this ... I wonder wether anyone out there, other than the IET library, has copies of editions 1 - 6. I was wandering wether, with the lack of retrospective requirements, I could restore my house wiring to its original spec ... ;-D! It is actually a serious request ... I would very much like to get hold of copies of Editions 1 - 6.

Did the original regs spawn from an expanding Telegraph act requirements?
Maybe the full house of regs books needs to precede the 1st edition

You could ask Tel about the others.. he wrote them I think

Remember when I started my time in 1973 worked to the 14th Edition bloke who took us at college gave us a copy of the 1st Edition it was only 8 pages in size and that was 2 A5 pages on 1 side of A4 paper, wish I had kept it now.

B&Q didn’t exist.

You went to the local hardware shop and got good advice. If he couldn’t help he’d put you in touch with another tradesman that could help. At times the place was like a labour exchange.
If I want some joinery doing I’d ask there, normally it would be favor for favor. No money changed hands other than for materials. Naturally the materials were bought at the shop, it was the unwritten rule.

Halcyon days when tradesmen were qualified and respected by all.

HHD, TVM only 5 to go ... I wonder what the incident rates were like then. My house had been built for 6 years and already been extended in size by ~ 60 % when these were first penned! On the basis of 'less is more' who would have preferred to work under the 1st edition?
