Anyone got some recommendations for a couple of decent games for the laptop? I quite like simulation and strategy types.

rigs of rods for simulation, open TTD/simcity4 deluxe for strategic simulation.
civilization 4 for strategy.
not the newest titles should run fine on older hardware.

Anyone played Project IGI? That was a cool game but I didn't get that far with it as I kept getting killed.

Also just downloaded World of Tanks this weekend. That is a great free game.

world of tanks is not free. is freemium, even worse. game itself may be free but you have to invest your hard earned cash to buy in-game currency needed to progress...

You can pay if you want to and yes you do progress quicker if you do. I am happy not to pay and just enjoy the game. It's free if you want it to be.

Just to follow on about freemium games. I wanted to compare this with another hobby.
A lad at work pays about £400 for a season ticked for PNE. That's £17.39 per game. (Other team prices will vary but I'm using this one.) £400 for 34.5 hours or £11.59 an hour.
I would spend a lot less on WoT if I put money into it and I would get more hours of enjoyment out of it.

One game I keep going back to is Tropico 4, played via Steam.
You play the dictator of a banana republic which you have to build up from humble beginnings, earning money by trading goods from resources and industry such as oil, pineapples, cigars, rum etc, and by building up a tourist industry. If you have a budget deficit for too long the world's superpowers will remove you from power and the game ends, also if you lose the elections, although you can deny your people the right to vote, or even rig the election.
You 'win' by completing certain objectives, such as exporting X amount of Llama wool, educating so many professors or sending a rocket into space, although seeing your island evolve is in itself quite satisfying.

It's a good game - you have the freedom to do pretty much what you want, from banning contraception or hosting a 'festival of love' to increase your population, to luring any Cuban rebels on the island to your booby-trapped mausoleum, imprisoning anyone who doesn't agree with you, or even sending your SWAT team to make sure they meet with an unfortunate "accident".

The only point which is slightly annoying is, maybe unsurprisingly for a game of this type, it has been designed so it's easiest to win by running a nonsensical utopia - give your people free housing, lots of free food, benefits, free education, raise wages well above the regional average, cut taxes, run a shopping centre selling luxury imported goods at a loss, and your profits just seem to increase.

There is a newer version, Tropico 5, available which I'd have bought if the reviews hadn't said was so similar.

If you are into angling, the fishsim 2 is very good

I play civilizations beyond earth and Fallout4 on my laptop.

World of warships is OK. You can spend money but don't have to.

Crazy machines is a fun little physics puzzle game.

There are loads of free to play browser strategy games out there but most are designed to part you from ever increasing amounts of cash.

Strategy games I like to play are usually from paradox like crusader kings 2 and hearts of iron 4 etc. They take some getting into a first but when you learn the mechanics of the games they are really good fun.

As for sim games, one I've been playing recently is IL-2 sturmovich which is a ww2 fighter/bomber pilot sim and the amount of detail that has gone into that game is amazing.
