Say for example you were prici.g a job for fitting some lights or sockets in a dwelling, would you put a mark up on the cost of fittings etc, or would you only "charge" for labour and leave parts at cost price?

Depends how you do your costings, but yes, normally a mark up on parts (profit for the company). The labour charge pays the wages. If you do pricing by point then it's normally built in with your price per point charge.
 
Yes mark up the parts. what does it cost you in time and fuel going to the merchants to collect bits, and you also have to guarantee them as well, so if you have to go replace a duff socket or whatever you are doing it for nowt. I used to mark up 25%.

Definitely mark up the prices, you need to cover your overheads getting the kit plus all the consumables you'll be using!

I usually charge what B&Q charge for acessories, less a bit
