Hi, im Dean.
Im new to the forum and my reason for joining is for some answers and advice on becoming an qaulified electrician.

Im currently working for an lifting gear specialists company and i have done for 5 months now, my role is to help maintain various lifting equipment whether electrical or mechanical. I joined with the hope of becoming an qaulified electrician having already completed my 2330 Electrical Installations level 2 and 3 a few years earlier. I know the next step is to complete an NVQ3 and complete the AM2 exam.

My problem is im not sure how the NVQ works so wasnt sure the electrical work im doing is varied enough to meet the requirements of the qaulification as most of the work is repairing damaged pendant cables, contactors or transformers on hoists and the majority of the installation work is installing overhead travel cranes or hoists.

So i was hoping that anyone could help by offering advice on where to go or what to do and what the NVQ requirements are and who assesses it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Try contacting your local college who are running the City and Guilds 2357. You should be able to complete the outstanding units as you have already completed most of it. Google your local college then give them a ring on Monday.

Depends what you want to do with your qualifications. The term "qualified" is such an ambiguous one these days and while many of us "old hands" don't consider anyone qualified who hasn't completed at least a 3-year apprenticeship (I realise that will get many peoples' backs up), the qualifications needed for different sectors of the electrical industry are more varied than a bag of pick & mix.

looks like you can do most of the nvq with what you doing write now mate, and nothing is stopping you visiting the new build site and just talk to a sparky to see if you can help him out from 1st fix to 2nd then testing stage then nvq 3 done, you mite even be lucky and the job you do will cover the nvq3, but you should sort it out sooner than later
