Dear All

Newbie here, I was wondering how to go about wiring a garage. I mean conncting into consumer unit from the house. I am happy with burying SWA and using caterary wires.

How do u go about connecting in to the house CU?? The garage will be required to have a lighting circuit and a power circuit.

Do u need separate circuit breakers, or can you fuse spur off for lighting??

i would go from house CU into a Metcad DP switch. teminate end of SWA in there and also provides DP isolation for garage and submain. would prefer to do this on Non RCD side.

then take SWA directly into garage unit (RCD main switch, and MCBS dependant on what you need, normally 16A/20A and a 6A). depends on your requirements

by havin and RCD in garage rather than house, if your lawnmower etc... trips the RCD your not trailing mud in house resseting it.

But surely the armoured cable has to also be protected by rcd??

Hey mate.

If the armoured cable is installed on the surface which usually the are, then there is no requirement to RCD protect it.

Same as if you install a circuit for a fridge or a freezer on the surface in trunking/conduit and label it for it's use then this too can be non-RCD protected.

Cheers.:D

If the Armour is earthed you can sink SWA into plaster without putting though an RCD
