Hi Marcuswareham.
Just read your thread, just to change the subject slightly I'm going to do a 3 day course on BS 7909 in stevenage next week. Just wondering if you have any past exam papers that i can have a look at. Also can you tell me what type testing is involved in the exam .
Kind Regards

Hey, is that the James Eade course by any chance, He is very nice guy

I don't have any past papers, and I think the course has now changed a little from when I did it.
But if you are already a Spark you will find it easy don't sweat

Testing is normally a demonstration of safe isolation,

loop impedance (PFC & PSCC) & RCD testing

There is less focus on insulation testing and continuity as equipment and distribution units we use are pre-tested in the warehouse before arriving on site

Hope that helps a little, enjoy the course

Hey, congratulations! You've overtaken my esteemedness ratio (reaction score/posts) and now leading by 0.34%. ISTR when Dan was first testing the automatic esteemed tag threshold it got set to a value where I was the only member with it.

Anyway, best wishes and have a great holiday

Hi Buddy, I read one of your posts about becoming qualified and having the work you have undertaken on your own home assessed. I think I am about to start a very similar course to the one you mentioned you had completed and was thinking about doing the exact same thing myself. I am moving into a new property in Feb that needs a full rewire. How have you found the process?
earthing of lamps. multimeter on ohms. short leads together to prove ( should read close to zero. then 1 lead on earth pin of plug. other lead on metalwork of lamp. reading should be within 0.1 ohms of what you got with the leads shorted together.

Hello mate, not sure how much of an issue this one is for you but FYI I actually emailed a UKPN area engineer that I know last night to ask from the horses mouth. But, I'm now a bit confused as your profile says you're in Devon - that's Western Power, not UKPN?? I'm not far from you in Somerset, by the way.

R.
Hi bud, how have you got on with your search for work? I look after solar farms and could probably give you a week or two per month. Mainly non intrusive inspections but callouts and fault finding as you progress.

I am in Devon but I have sites in South Wales, along the M4 and around Chichester.

Oh right. Mother in law lives up the M4 (Bath area) as that's where my wife's from. I'm currently in France sorting out some bits on my property - is it ok if I come back to you week beginning Dec 7th and we can maybe have a chat??

For terrestrial aerial amp and 8-way distribution I have a 19 yr old Labgear unit in my loft. Can I take a coax directly off the unit, down and through a plasterboard wall to a TV without using a screened wall socket and fly lead? What does the small PCB in a wall socket do and is it necessary?

Could any one recommend a good brand of an electric radiator for a bedroom around 15 square meters. Preferably oil filled as the room would be in use all the time. Thanks.

re amp question.it's 3A@ 12V so the current @ 240 is 20 x less than at 12V i.e 3/20 = 0.15A.

I forgot about this. So I can buy an additional transformer and have that come off the same fused spur too in order to avoid over loading it?

I'm reusing the old alarm wires to power various things by stepping down with this transformer then stepping down again to 5v dc.

So far they've all been 5v dc 1.5 amp, this new device is a ring alarm bell box and is 2.5amp (still 5vdc)

Thanks mate (again!)

This device is a plug but they've all been usb so far, not sure why.
the red marked L1 goes in the centre terminal of the dimmer. the red marked L2 goes in either of the end terminals. the 2 blacks go in a connector but not to the switch. and make sure you connect the earth wires to the earth terminal on the switch plate ( the brass terminal shown on botto right of photo.

Hi
Are you still after a multifunction tester? I have a Megger 1711 with a black megger holdall if you are interested.

Hi thanks for the reply, I'm looking for a 1721 myself
over here, it was common practice back on the 60's and 70's that a hall/landing light would have the L (hot) feed from a downstairs circuit and the N from the upstairs. that could be similar to your scenario.
Hi all, I've spent the last 12 years looking after my wife after she had an accident,
and recently completed my level 2 2365.
Now looking for ANY electrical work experience in the Tyne and Wear area.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
re. Hob.
the hob will never pull 32 A as the elements cycle on and off. even when all are on, except oninitial start-up, but the cable will withstand this for short periods. if you were to measure the current, you'd rarely see more than 10 - 15a at any time. so the Bosch cable will be fine.

Thank you telectrix. You've put my mind at rest.
It just seemed odd that a 7400 watt appliance came with such thin wires to connect to the mains.
Two other Bosch appliances (a built in oven - 3000 watts and built in microwave - 3000 watts) came with 2 core and earth factory fitted cables. They are on a separate 32 amp circuit.

Hi James

I hope you dont mind me messaging you, but i am also with stroma and considering signing up fully to napit next year, currently i have just paid extra for the napit EICR add on

How did you find them transferring over? have you had an assessment yet? if so how does it compare to stroma ones?

Thank mate paul

James18288
Hello mate,

I started my transfer to Napit in March!! With Covid it’s taken forever.

they have been really helpful throughout though. I’ve had a couple of assessments cancelled. And am still actually waiting for one. All the business checks have been done by email though. I’m waiting for a date any day now? So hopefully soon.

Once I’ve done the assessment I’ll let you know how it is compared to stroma

Thanks that would be great!?
Sorry to hear about your accident, hope you have a fast and full recovery. Thought you had been a bit quiet recently.
I used to do a bit of diving too, just air to 30m.

Get well soon
It is use on installations requiring restricted access (medical equipment, computers etc.), or a special type of earthing
if you can't get someone more local, Wrexhem is just on the border of my sphere of operations. can qoute sensible rate if needed.

Ok thanks, was just seeing if there's anything else I can try before calling someone out, no idea how much it will cost either which is more annoying
