10 Amp Extension Lead

Hi

Is it safe to use a 10 Amp Extension Lead with a 7 Amp Car Battery Charger? Apologies if sounds crass - just need reassurance it's safe please. Thank you.

If you are saying you have an extension lead that can take 10A and the battery charger only draws 7A then it will be ok, from a current carrying capacity.
If the extension lead is coiled up while you are using the charger then heat from the coiled up extension lead may cause a problem.

Oh.... and, welcome to the forum mate...

what he says. ^^^^^^. if its a coiled lead, unwind before use unless you prefer it melted.

Thank you. Yes, the extension lead is rated 10 Amps and will be used laid out flat/fully extended with a CTEK 12 Volt/7 Amp Charger.

Sorry I don't understand. Does that mean the 10Amp Extension lead is unsuitable with the 12 Volt/7 Amp Car Battery Charger?

The charger almost certainly outputs at 12v, 7A. The 230v input supplies an isolating transformer from which the 12v is derived. The current on this 230v supply will be nowhere near 7A, the 7A is the output only.

Ok. So the 10 Amp Extension Lead, fully unwound, will be safe to use with said charger?

The charger will pull about half an amp on the 230V side so the extension lead will be fine to use for this application.
