Discuss 3P continuity L1 Earth in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Quick question for someone... Recently came across 3phase industrial heater, changing over a faulty isolator, in terminal box where equipment cable meets supply... I have continuity between L1 and Earth but nothing between L2 and L3 and earth. Disconnected earth from source and still the same.

Not good to have continuity between any Phases and Earth I would have thought, although your post is somewhat confusing.

So you have a possible short between L1 and earth??

Yeah so it's telling me, I have not checked to see if there is voltage there when powered up but I would think there would be if cont L1 E? Think ill need to look in heater panel, I have not replaced anything else so I am guessing its been running like that before

If you have a short from line to earth with a sufficiently low resistance it will trip the protective device, hopefully.

The heater probably has 3 elements.
L1 - N, L2 - N, L3 - N.
L1 element has probably burnt out and is now shorting L1 to E.

Sounds good to me mate ill indulge into that, prior to faulty isolator it was not going through cycle to start up, I was gonna look at air pressure stat but ill check this first, thanks
