hi all, some advice please, i have been ask to wire a work shop, it has incomming mains, but no earth anywhere,so do i use an earth spike? it also has stone walls, do i use conduit or can i get away with just twin and earth, thanks for any advice, john

Hi John and welcome to the forum.:D

When you say it has mains, is that a sub-main from the house for example, or is it a DNO supply??

It seems odd that there is no earthing system at all, possibly it is meant to be a TT system and would need an earth rod yes.

I would go for PVC conduit every time in that situation especially with it being a workshop.

Cheers.

Gotta agree with lenny on that.

Workshops are fairly high risk when it comes to installations and twin and earth on its own just wouldn't be suitable.

hi lenny, in the corner of the area is an amoroured cabkle coming in from the outside, it ends with a 100amp fuse, but that is all there is, i have to put a temperary socket and light, so the electric company can come in and instal a mtre, as for using conduit, i thought i may have to, but it will be a pig to fix to the walls, thanks john

John, I personnally would use Trunking and Galv conduit in a workshop, due to it being that a "workshop" possibly if you use pvc conduit even that could be damaged, and in the earthing i agree it will need an earth rod, and that would need proving as in a test to make sure its good enough.

Hey.

Just a thought, but the DNO may supply you with a PME connection upon completion of the job if they have to come in to install a meter then they may not have fininshed they're work.

Might be worth asking, buy like you say for a temp supply you will need to install a rod.

Cheers.
