if your adding an lighting point or fused spur to an existing instalation
that has no rcd protection do you need to provide rcd protection

Scott, if your adding to a existing circuit for example that would need RCD protection under 17th edition, then yes you would have to upgrade the circuit to comply..
 
For a lighting point the cable would only have to go through and RCD if the switchwire (or other extended cable)was less than 50mm burried in the wall, or was to be fitted in a bathroom.

If you spur off, can alway put an RCD fused spur next to what your spuring off. that way the bit you are adding will meet the required 17th Regs
