From an electrical point of view it dosen't matter provided it crimps the cables correctly and is adjusted to make a tight connection onto the cable strands.
It is sometimes important from a mechanical point of view, the square crimper is sometimes better because it fits better into the screw terminals between the screw and the wall of the terminal

Ball cocks the hexagonal crimps will never in a month of sundays crimp a bootlace furell.

For bootlace & other insulated & non-insulated crimps
Ratchet crimping tool and Crimp Tools UK

For coax crimping
Coax Connector Crimping Tool : Cable Tools : Maplin

They aren't coax crimpers m8, I just describe them as hexagonal that's all have a look at the knipex site under crimpers.

I have the RS one but I think it's made by knipex, it crimps in 4 directions so it crimps square but if not adjusted correctly it can get stuck and damage the crimp, I think the other type you are talking about are cheaper anyway.

How do you work that out?

Bootlace ferrules are circular, Hex crimps are for circular ferrules and pins. As long as the Hex is 0.866x the diameter of the ferrule it will crimp it without damage to the ferrule.

If the joint fails, it then comes back to you and they say, did you use a correctly calibrated crimping tool that is designed for the purpose of making off bootlace ferrules.

I always use RS crimpers producing a square crimp. I do alot of panel building. The have no ratchet and thus are not calibrated. The are however very widely used in the trade. I have just recieved some double insulated (ie thick insulation) 4mm DC cable for a job and the customer requires the use of insulated furrele crimps. So I'm wondering if calibration is not an issue, can 6mm crimps be used on 4mm cable if a mechanicially solid crimp is achieved. I 'd be very interested in your views.
