Evening all,

I was called out yesterday, customer complaining that there line is crackly and are unable to take any card payments due to this.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

Looked inside phone point and blue was connected to 2 ,blue/white 5, orange was also connected along with white and orange but not sure of the numbers.

What are the other numbers for?

Thanks jumpin jax,

does the orange and orange and white cable need to be connected?

The cable looks like it has joins all along the cable run. also outside its been joined with connectors and taped up. Would this contribute to the problem, poor terminations etc

Check the line with a seperate phone at the master socket and try the pdq in that port, if not ok phone bt, its their problem

as jax said, more likley the fault is external with all the rain weve had, crackling lines is common on cable joints full of water somewhere.

Nowadays the orange and orange/white do not have to be connected, it is meant to slow broadband down when they are as it was for older phones. Just use a test phone along the line and reconnect any shoddy idc or connections

BT cable should not be joined with connector block, only idc ,s or gel splices as jax said try at master if crackle continues its external fault if no crackle its on extension and the best option is replace it you can do checks on the line coming in but you need special meters but thats BT,s problem crackling is usually a damaged cable or joint whereas a buzzing is usually a leg down to earth.hope this helps.

The wires are connected correctly, the orange is probably connected to 3.
I had a customer with a crackly line, was the RJ9 plug on the curly lead between the handset and phone, probably got yanked at some point.
Turned the lead around and the crackling was gone. Advised the customer to get a new lead.

The orange used to be connected from the first box and into every extension but not used anyore. It was the 'anti-tinkle'. On the old rotary dial phones supplied by BT/GPO, there was a bell inside the phone and when you dialled out on another phone this bell in the rotary dial phone would tinkle away whilst you're dialling, the 'anti-tinkle' wire was suppose to stop it.
