any tips or advice on having or not having a business coach

I have a meeting next week sort meet & greet to discuss potential of working with a business coach.

there to help a business with direction, growth, development, specific or non specific business goals as well as any personal goals.
example could be the exit plan for the business owner.
many different things to many different businesses

Can add value, but be clear on your budget and expectations. Ask some blunt questions and get clear answers, otherwise there's a risk that it'll just become another expense.

They teach you buzz words and the bleedin obvious. They only people they advantage are themselves.

I personally think, having used consultants for a charity some friends and I formed, yes to a limited degree maybe. This consultant was £500 a day. I do not think they truly justified the cost. I also beleive there are a tremendous amount of resources for free from local enterprise business support with mentors. There is also REACH which is retired executives (if it is still in action) who help for nothing to very modest fees. The most expensive advice which is useful is taxation which depending on your turnover will pay for itself. Also insurance advice. We (charity) turned over 750k p.a. at our peak. And remember for that kind of money you could employ someone who could really take that forward on a commission basis for far less.

And determine the way she believes they were successful & in which field.... Some businesses can be in niche markets with little or no competition... whilst we sparks get "attacked" from all sides...

In light of that info I think the best business advice they could give you would be "become a business coach"

Seriously, what can someone teach you in a meeting that's worth between 1k and 12k that you can't read in a book? Perhaps they may be able to tailor the theories they have learnt (and if you're really really lucky put into practice themselves) to the specifics of your business, but you'll get a better understanding of it yourself if you just find yourself some decent business management and marketing textbooks (not the mass market -------s your see in WHSmith, the stuff they use on university courses).
