Im fitting a Ei146 optical smoke on it I've got a live, ic, and neutral. I'm a noddy admitably I've looked at the instructions to save my blushes but there nothing telling me what I need to know. Out the ceiliing I've got a 3 core grey, black, brown and an earth. What goes wear sp? Please ? I'm saying grey to neutral earth to a chock block black (switch) ic and brown to live ....

Sounds like the one you are replacing is interlinked to another one somewhere, find that and check the wiring is indeed interlinked then wire the same way.

Yea I'v seen people use black and grey as either neutral or Interconnection. You'll simply have to check how the rest of them are done and copy that. Make sure you sleeve the conductors accordingly!

After a very long day, I wired the live into the interconnect.....Made a good bang!!! Smelly too!!!

Check how the other alarms are wired as black and grey are often wired either/or

like the others have said brown to live normally i wire them black with brown sleeve to IC and gray with blue sleeve to neutral , like has been said if you have others check them for wirng ,get it wrong and they make a good bang as CBW has said

What dillb said, need to find the one it's wired from to see whether black or grey has been used for interconnect. Live and Neutral speak for themselves ic is interconnect (that's the trigger that is activated when the alarm goes off to signal other interconnected alarms to sound their built in siren).

I really hate cores not being correctly identified. Some people just don't seem to grasp that neutral must be blue (or black in pre-harmonised colours).

Also, with interconnection it is best to leave black (and not sleeve brown) to distinguish from the 230V phase. (Black is permitted for interconnection by BS 5839.)

Your going to have to either get your leads on the existing or look at one of the others.

Agree, I never label the IC with brown and always leave black. it never gets a live potential and only gives continuity to the neutral, hence why it interlinks on battery only.

was never a problem before brussels euoroprats interfered with the colours. red id nature's danger colour, always has ben, always will be. brown is the colour of earth, same as that which they chuck on your coffin after you been electrocuted by stupid colours.

Makes me laugh whenever I see pictures people show me from their holidays abroad in other European Countries, with uninsulated cables hanging between poles at head height and wires wrapped around overhead lines.
It seems that only a small handful of Countries actually bother to comply with European law.

i can only think of 4, england, scotland, wales, ireland. ( not too sure about the last one, never been there )

Just to make guitarist laugh:laugh3:
Some pictures of quality wiring in tourist locations!
They are using harmonised colours as you can easily see and some connections have been taped for safety!
Oh and in the hotel the CUs were at shoulder height with lots of missing blanks.

Thank you Richard, I do love seeing how the rest of Europe take their safety so seriously while they are lecturing us on what we should be doing.

As I say cheers for all the advise and help and not giving me any grief for not knowing :blush5:

Ive got another question due to being a bit of bull in a china shop. I've got to replace an extractor fan with exactly the same one only newer but I didn't pay attention to where my live went assuming it would just be a earth neutral and live termination, well upon further investigation I've got a earth terminal a neutral terminal and I know what got in these but then I've got a terminal marked t a terminal marked LH and a terminal marked LL I would say the live conductor should go in the Lh but I'd sooner know for sure then a bang to tell me otherwise, does anyone know I would refer to the instructions but they are long gone
