So, just had a call out. Customer said fuse board not wrking at all. On my way to the job, running a few senarios in me head, as you do. Get to the job to find its a new, dual rcd split board. Ok I thought, prob just the rcd thats tripped. I opened the board and all the mcbs and rcds were on. The customer then informs me, in a quiet and polite way, Ive just fitted that board and I went to turn it on and nowt works!!! Tut, tut, tut I said, you should ne be doin that! Anyway, after after removing the cover, I noticed he had all the neutrals in the wong bar and he had also rearanged the neutrals feeding the rcds. So I knew it wouldnt take long to sort it but because this was a DIY that went wrong, I took my time and made the job last an extra hour. I know I shouldnt but it just peees me off that they try and do it them selves.

I informed him that its needs to be tested and notified (by a proper sparks, with proper test gear), and he said he couldnt be bothered!!!

Well I left in shock but what can ya do.

Jay

By the way, he bought the cu from Wikes coz it was on offer. A 13 way board and he only has 5 circuits.

One of them crap situations - everything we've learnt in our trade says tests the board, but if you're not getting paid for it then i don't blame you. One of them situations where your head has to rule your heart - no point working for free, as thats what the client wants. Advise him the scenarios that could happen, and why a certificate is a "must have" and then if he still says no, what can you do.

I woulda probably done a quick global IR though. Mark.

Get this all the time when certing addons etc to diy installs , Were constantly asked to cert there work to save them the LA costs involved & put right faults . By the time i've filled in comments on existing installation they dont want a cert LOL

I probably shud of done a ir before I energised it, bit of a blond moment there but i just saw what the problem was and fixed it. I did offer to do an EICR but he was having none of it. Obviousley if the rcd didn't set, then i would of started testing to find the fault.

Jay not only have you made me laugh but I will also say you did the right thing mate, just walk away from this chap, on his own head be it. Just cover your arse.

To be honest, it would of been better if the rcd didnt set, then I could of insisted on the EICR
and job would of been a good en.

What sort of Goon, who can balls up a replacement as spectacularly as that, is going to bother with getting it tested as safe. If he was that concerned for his well being, he wouldn't have attempted the change in the first place. There is a work for the like. NUMPTY

Jay you just cant help some people. I'm having a problem with someone similar to you but I'm walking from it. If I post it up it will be in the Arms, lets see if the rounded door handle (customer) gets back to me first.

If you have sorted out his D/B and then powered it up, you are liable for any accidents caused by any potentially dodgy wiring coming from it. I would have insisted on doing the testing, but, I am a worrier.

hillbillie, with all due respect if the customer is adamant he doesn't want it testing - what do you do? I for sure wouldn't do an EICR for free.

Theres no helping people, you could maybe construct a letter saying that you don't think its safe and that you take no-responsibilty because the customer refused point blank testing. But apart from that, im at a loss really. Swings and round abouts.

Spelling mistake, tut-tut wade.

Apology accepted.

Sorry buddy couldn't resist, i know how you go round spell-checking everyone so thought i'd play you at your own game! AVIT SON! as they say, ha.

J sparks and Marc. I'm not criticising.

I had an issue with a client recently who was insisting on me carrying out unsafe practices to save him time and money. I ended up calling my scheme provider and was advised to stand my ground as I would be liable if I turned an old board back on that had an unsafe circuit on it. I eventually walked off the site.

Ideally the circuits could have been tested before you corrected all the faults at the D/B but I know, it's not your home or D/B so you have to make a decision, walk away and lose the money or risk it.

Supposed to be an apostrophe in front of 'AVIT, tut tut.

Ooops :( now who looks a complete T... - Cheers spin lol

Good man, mines a draftflow beer, any type, John Smiths , or Worthys for example hehe

Oh, i am suprised! I thought you were more of a WKD man :laugh3:

I know your not criticising buddy - and can see your point to an extent. To me if JAY were to right a cover-letter, explaining in brief the situation - this should be enough. Give the client a copy, and try pursuade the client to sign both copies.

it's getting very boring on here DIYER install and everyone rips it to bits same old same old it's been done to death

Really, the guy changed a DB and connected all the Neutrals wrongly, god knows what could have happened, do you want us to sprinkle some fairy dust on any DIYers who do this in the future and then everything will be Okay, Come on what do you expect in this circumstance LOL

If that's how you want to play thing's my lad, that's absolutely fine by me. That was however, a simple typo. I can (contrary to popular belief) spell the word, "word", see, just did it twice in a row.

Now if you slip up Mark, just once, i'll be on you like a hungry leper.

I was thinking spearmint flavour WKD or perhaps Bacardi Breezer (mango flavour).

HAHA, Cider shandy in the summer and creamflow Beer in the winter, If I had a wicked it would have to be before 7 oclock otherwise I would fall asleep, I can't drink like I use to 20 years ago lol, and the wife also won't let me haha

No men are allowed to drink WKD's because we are men. What's wrong with you lot. Think you must have fallen over on your bag of fairy dust MDJ the way your carrying on

"wife won't let me" "I'll fall asleep"

I'm just hearing "i'm a big vagina, i'm a big vagina"

;)

Leper, Spin, Leper.

I was trying to drum up some artistic mental scenery for Mark to wonder around in before he considers correcting my spelling again.

Sure Leopards are scary, but a LEPER.... no one likes a Leper. Not even Zoo's keep them

What and you and your merry men are going to change that your allways going to get people who think they know better the only way to stop it is a change in the law so people can't buy anything electrical to install.
