Hello All,

I'm in UK, and I'm after some info to help a family member in Ireland.

They've been advised that the cable to their earth rod needs to be upgraded as it's apparently too small. Want to reassure them this is really needed before they pay for it to be done.

I'm used to what BS7671 says, i.e. minimum conductor size of 2.5mmsq, 16mmsq or 25mmsq depending upon sheath and mechanical protection.

Can anyone with a copy of IS 10101 tell me if there is a similar set of minimum earthing electrode conductor CSA rules for a standard rural domestic installation (TNCS) in Ireland?

Thanks!

Standard (12kVA) supply requires a minimum of 10mm^2 Earthing Conductor. Enhanced (16kVA) supply requires a minimum of 16mm^2 Earthing Conductor. If 25mm^2 tails are used (as with 16kVA) then it also needs to be 16mm^2 minimum. Note that the Earthing Conductor is different from the Main Protective Conductor ("Neutralising link").

Thanks for the info Risteard. The neutralising link is the same size as the meter tails, looks like 16mmsq.
