Domestic

Your consumer unit should look like this:
A. Main Switch
B. Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs)
C Residual Current Device (RCD)
If you don't have one of these devices fitted you could be at risk of electric shock.

Since the turn of the century when we first started to use electricity in our homes, the amount of electrically powered equipment we use day to day has steadily increased. Unfortunately, this increase in demand requires an upgrade of the electrical system and all too often domestic installations are poorly designed, installed and maintained.

BS7671 (Requirements for Electrical Installations) recommends that domestic installations are inspected every 10 years to ensure compliance with the regulations and that installations are safe to use / fit for purpose. The consumer unit (Fuseboard) should be clearly labelled and should also display inspection stickers showing the last inspection and date of the next inspection. Socket outlets which might reasonably be expected to supply portable equipment outdoors must also be protected by a 30mA RCD in order to prevent electric shock to users. This also applies to all cables buried in walls below a depth of 50mm.
