Same script here really, not out till Jan, but got a plan.........just a little concerned about replacing what is a decent wage after all.......I really fancy setting up as a one man band, don't have any illusions about work/reward ratio having been self employed before, so any encouragement most welcome......and what sort of earning level can I expect? I see myself housebashing more than anything else.......

That particular member hasn't logged on for over 3 years.

There are some other ex forces members though, maybe start yourself another thread to grab some more attention.

lol, i could give you a brief paragraph about what life was like in the forces as an electrician! basically it involved military training, sport, pt, odd jobs, vehicle servicing, fuel accounts, red tape, and if there was enough time left in the day we might do a bit of electrical work, i.e fix a generator.I'm an ex royal signals electrician.

Hello Randyrat,

I am ex Royal Air Force Avionics engineer. Left in 1986, been in the trade in some way shape or form since i left the mob. B2 licensed engineer on civil airliners for a while, service engineer for a Forklift Truck manufacturer working on electrical and electronic trucks, worked for a very large soft drinks manufacturer as a maintenance electrician, worked for myself in domestic and commercial electrical work, and now teach it. Initially when i left the RAF i found it difficult to settle back into a "normal" life, i got frustrated with the poor level of discipline i encountered in civvy life, and the general moaning and groaning that people seemed to do. It took me about 2 years to fully settle back down, and during that time i drifted in and out of jobs because i got bored with a "normal" routine. You will feel like a fish out of water for a while, and if you get a job with authority dont expect people to jump when you tell them to, it wont happen, you will be more likely to get told where to go. Feel your way with people, dont expect the loyalty from colleagues that you are used to in the forces. Getting work when i came out in the 80's was easy with the RAF on my CV, and it still counts to some degree today. With HM forces on your CV a future employer even today knows that they will get a well trained disciplined person with a lot of self esteem, and get up and go.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Cheers...........Howard
