If the lead could be used to connect to a class 1 appliance that does require earthing then it is correct to fail them. If the end connector is a 2 pole type that can only be connected to class 2 items then the leads are OK regardless of the fact there is a 13A 3 pin plug at the other end. Good quality class 2 leads often have a 13A plug top with a plastic earth pin 2 core flex and a two pole end connector.

Have compiled a small video about this subject on youtube.
Correct in saying class 2 leads supplied with a complete plastic earth pin are ok with some items but there are counterfeit IEC leads with a half plastic earth pin out there. These somtimes seem to be supplied with IT equipment or TV's which are CLASS 1.

Hi jaguar - seem to have got a bit tangled up in this thread somehow. Its a pity people keep referring to "kettle" leads and not IEC leads if that's what they mean. Most kettles these days are wired into their bases.

A picture of actual lead termination that started the thread would be most useful - then it could be determined if in fact there was an earth terminal and of course a corresponding socket in the tv.

I do come across 2 pin "IEC type" cords which are used with medical nebulisers - and these (nebulisers) as well as indicated as being double insulated have 2 pin "IEC type" sockets. And of course the 2 pin "IEC type" cords will not fit into an IEC socket (3 pin).

The original kettle IEC plug also had a notch in the bottom as it was made from a different type of plastic which had a higher working temperature with it being used on a kettle.
