Discuss Fault Finding Terminology: NET AM2 section C2. in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi all,

Sadly I have to retake the fault finding section of the AM2 next Monday.

We used a multimeter to determine faults.

There are millions of types of fault, however only 4 types of wiring faults are being tested:

Open Circuit = unambiguous/obvious = no ohm reading.
High Resistance = unambiguous/obvious. =high ohm reading.

Cross Connection and Short Circuit.
I understand from training, that short circuit is a line to line or line neutral phase fault creating a higher resistance in another the circuit.
Cross Connection could be anything Crossed over which could be short circuit.
My question is what does the AM2 understand by cross connection and how is this different from short circuit?

Is this a polarity fault or some fault limited to non powered circuits like the equipotential bonding and data/comms?
All books like Scanlon, kitcher and even lecturers give me vagueness.

Probably over thinking as the feedback stated I got a good number of faults but failed to specify locations. Just want to clear up. Many thanks in advance.

Hi - to me a cross connection (in relation to a fault) would be where a cable is connected to the wrong place. Connection is good (low Ohms etc) but it's not where it should be. Example might be on 2 way switching where it results in light being always on, say. Not sure if that's what AM2 defines though.

i would say that a cross connection is either:
1. where there is a connection between 2 separate circuits so that either OCPD being in the ON position makes both circuits "live". or
2. where part of a circuit has incorrect connections bridging across part of the circuit. e.g. a link between sockets 2 and 5 of a 6/7 socket circuit.
