I use an apostrophe to indicate;
(A) The possessive, i.e. This is Tel's zimmer frame.
(B) The structure of unusual words, i.e. I bcc'd a copy to all of the to$$ers.
(c) Missing letters in the middle of words or phrases, i.e. Aren't flashes something we should avoid.
