hello everyone

I finish college in 2007 achived the 2330 level 2 & 3, bein working part time with a few different electricians buliding up my experince. now i take on jobs alone i feel confident of doing while i look for a permant job in a company. the problem im having is most jobs that i wana apply for ask for at least 2 refs. i can get one from a prev employer but cant get the other due to not bein in contact with them any more. any advice how i could over come this? also on my cv ive lefted it as bein employed as i have no idea how to write up an good cv stateing that im self employed. as you may of notice english ant my strongest of subjects.
Any advice with be much appreicated. Thank you in advance

Will the 'Different' sparks you have been working with not give you references?? Best thing you cam do is offer to work a week for free and show them what you can do.

i would get a spark who knows you to say they have worked with you etc and pop their number on for a contact. most companies don`t actually chase up cv`s but want a couple of names to show you have them

to be honest mate if i had the chance to even chat to them like an interview i would explain my situation to them but the jobs i come across ask for refs with a cv they so no ref no contact lol. one of the sparks my recent 1 i fell out with we dont talk no more. got 1 that cant speak good english and the other 2 iv not been in contact over the years as they no longer stay in this country. so that leaves me with 1 ref with is a good 1. the only thing i can think of is using the people ive dun work for?

Surely 'big decent firms' can afford the thousands of pounds it can cost to recruit and interview 'decent' candidates, personally I would never work for free, I think a trial day or probationary period (with pay) is more than adequate.

I think you need to write your cv like a portfolio of the work you have done so far, what circuits you have wired, how you have ensured they met the bs7671 wiring regs, the problems you have faced (ie going into a job and seeing seriously dodgy wiring and how you have corrected these mistakes). If writen English is a problem then use a spellchecker and then run it by someone (or post it on a forum for some feed back). Your c.v. should be more based on the skills and knowledge you have gained so far.

as for spelling mate, just take your time abnd proofread your CV and covering letter. Go through a dictionary to correct your mistakes, and yuo will find that your spelling will improve, compared to using a spellchecker. An imployer wont be impressed by poor spalling, as if your not diligent enough to check your CV, than how can he trust you to label up 100's of cables properly.

Good luck mate

John
