Immersion timer question

Questioning my electricity bill this month i was looking at my old immersion timer it has 3 settings off on and timer putting my voltage tester on the load side of the contacts i noticed that when i switch it to on and timer settings im still getting a voltage reading (no matter whether the pegs are in or out)surely the timer setting in the off position their should be no reading?? am i stating the obvious and being thick! probably!

Do you have any more info on the type of switch it is? Does it have a digital display?

I would expect the switch to be an open ciruit in the off postion (i.e. switch open) and showing no voltage going out to the appliance.

When in the on position or timer position (closed circuit) I would expect the switch to show voltage at the terminals incoming and going out to the appliance.

Obviously dependant on the timers allocated time would depend on whether the voltage would be present at the terminals going out due to switch being open or closed.

Dont know how old the switch is but if my theory is right that it sounds like you may need a new one?

Is your voltage tester a meter or is it a screwdriver with a glow light?
