Hi all,

this is my first post so go easy on me. A frien of mine owns a bar and he has some issues with his electrics. where the DJ stand is there is a switch for a small strobe light. when he turns it on and off and cuts the music out momentarily. what could this be?

Also in the security room, when they switch on the outside light switch the main CCTV moniter flickers on and off for a few sconds.

any help will do. thank you in advance.

John

Welcome to the forum John :).

You're down as an apprentice, if you are on an active Electrical course then consider applying for access to out Trainee section where we have selected Mentors to help you with those questions expected of anyone learning the ropes, its not a requirement to join but it does have its benefits.

As we don't know what kind of music system is in use, it's impossible to say. Mains-borne and radiated RF interference from switching inductive loads can cause all sorts of clicks and pops over audio systems but most equipment is designed to tolerate them without cutting out completely. Same with the CCTV, we can't tell what issues might exist with the video cables, whether it's actually the monitor or DVR or whatever that's actually going wobbly.

There's one possibility other than interference and that is a high resistance connection in a shared supply. The switch-on surge of one item can then drag the voltage down feeding them both, and the other item sees a brown-out. This can be checked by plugging one of the two into an alternative supply.
