Discuss lathe tripping after quarter turn on startup ? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Guys / Girls , i have been asked to go and replace a light fitting tomorrow in a domestic environment and only have an hour window to get it fitted.
Customer has asked it i can take a look at his single phase lathe whilst there. Because of the time frame i wont have long to try and diagnose the issue.
he says he starts it up, it does a quarter turn then trips out , any suggestion as to where to start the testing process and what it could likely be ?
I know its a very open ended question but any suggestion may get me to diagnose within the time period i have.
Thanks in advance

Check is spins freely first if all to rule out mechanical issues.
Check the capacitor/capacitors for run/run-start. Usually they budge and leak when they fail but not always so may require further testing.
Look to see if it was always a single phase lathe or a conversion from 3phase

are the capacitors generally the common issue ?

IF nothing else has changed and it has been working where its sited it would be where I would start, depending on the motor it might have 1 or 2 capacitors, if there is 2 there will be a centrifugal switch in the motor which is used to switch from the start cap to the run cam
Thanks for the advice , very helpful.
