Asked to price a job where a house is getting extended/reno
The owner is going to live in it- and then rent out 2/3 of the rooms

She wants most of the house to be under her meter

Then 2 or 3 of the rooms to be monitored/metered seperately
-by sounds of it she wants them to phyically have to top up- as apposed to just monitor their usage and bill them.

Whats a neat way of doing this in a typical domestic setup

The neat way of doing it is to get someone else to do it!

The whole house would be on the single suppliers meter unless you arranged for two incoming supplies and MPANs which would be impractical with the additional costs. You could split the supply and fit a second meter to monitor just the non metered rooms if you wanted but it seems redundant.

Practically it is easiest to run a fuse protected distribution circuit into the rooms to be monitored and fit a MID certified pre payment meter then a board for the rooms lights, power, etc. Messy and inconvenient but possible. It gives full control of the supply to the rooms to the tenant so that no input is required.

I had some work from a guy recently who inherited a large hourse and wanted something similar, he wanted each of the 3 rooms he was renting out to be metered to cover power, electric heating and lights. then also the downstairs kitchen/lounge to be metered so he could divide by 3. he was living on the 2 upper floors and was a right penny pincher! I explained the cost of the works and he quickly decided he would just charge them more in rent to cover not just there usage but his own aswell!

I had fun disassembling the meters in a house, light and power off the better, I think it took accepted the old 5p and 10p coin and the light fitting had that odd socket that you could plug an electric iron in to.

I think in the past you could set you own tariff within reason, the same as if you install a coin operated phone in the hallway.

I love slum landlords ;o)))))
