I have a Stanley stud finder ,which is not reliable .I do not want a new one that is going to cost the earth ,but reliable to find studs walls or joists on ceilings .

The Bosch range, I have one of the GSM range. They look for everything and have a zoom facility to pinpoint. Picks up AC. I’m confident with it - which means a lot.

If there's no cables up there already, a nice sharp 2mm drill bit will find the joists and leave minimal damage, easily covered with a lightweight filler like this:
Ronseal 5 Minute Multipurpose Ready-Mixed Filler White 600ml - https://www.screwfix.com/p/ronseal-5-minute-multipurpose-ready-mixed-filler-white-600ml/77381?tc=OB8&ds_kid=92700023141674792&ds_rl=1249484&ds_rl=1245250&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3p2V-rLO2gIVDPEbCh0x3QxvEAQYAyABEgLsEPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CNKWroazztoCFcgh0wodlyUOyA

I know a lot of folks don't like this filler, but it works for me and the "unusual" consistency is ideal for an amateur plasterer like me!

I have a very old Stanley stud finder I bought probably 20 years ago. I've tried numerous other models and makes over the years including the Bosch and to be honest I've never found one that works better for me regardless of the price.
