Evening All...

Just getting a contract together for my apprentice, this is all new to me my first one. Had him on a just over month now and brilliant think I've been very lucky to find a good one here.

Hopefully someone out there may be able to lend a hand if poss thank you.

Have a standard form one which I'm trying to tweak but want to get the wording correct.

Want to put something along the lines of when he qualifies in 3 years time that he has to stay with me for a further year (and not just bugger off and set up on his own just down the road from me.)

Cheers Sy

Been phoning:25:around today and have managed to get a free 1/2 hour with an Employment solicitor :smart: which should hopefully sort it :smiley2:

Are you paying his college course fee's?
If so write into his contract that he pays you back costs if he quits or leaves :)

Nice one Sythal for giving a lad a chance. Hopefully he will be loyal, but being in the apprentice world, and having some grasp of employment law, i do know that you cant stop him working for another employer or starting on his own in competition with you, he has a legal right to earn a living. You could put a clause in his contract to tie him to you, or pay back any training costs, but if you had to pursue this, then it will be a civil action, and will cost the national debt in fees. Hopefully you have advice from a more qualified source than me, but in any case, if you treat the lad properly, he will come to respect you and your business, and will give you many years loyal service, and may even take over from you when you hang up your megger.

But the best of luck to both of you, and if you or he have any problems with his apprenticeship, i would be happy to advise.

Cheers.............Howard

PS which qualification is he doing?

Thanks Howard greatly appreciated. He's been with me unofficially now for the last 8 weeks, things are going really well.

Few little cock ups here and there but thats all part of the learning curve.

He starts back at college on Monday NVQ level 3/ AM2 (completed his NVQ level 2 last year of his own doing.)

I took out that clause in the end about tying him into me after his training finishes.

The idea is that he will be an investment for my business and like you say I will be fair with him and hopefully it will pay off in the long run (already brought him some tools when he's done well/ a breakfast here and there etc..)

Cheers Sy
