Could someone tell me how far back do u chase a back box in a new build

Its all down to whether the walls will be dry lined, rendered and plastered or stud.

Dry line - generally sink them back 10mm or not even that.

Rendered and plastered - front edge of box flush (ish) with the cable drops.

You would be better off talking with the builder and plasterer about what they want you to do.

Whatever you do make sure they are far enough back add 5mm if you have to on what you may think the final finish will be, I don't think their are many things worse than having a box sitting out of the wall when its been finished.

use capping, looks good, stops idiots catching cables, easier and more secure if thermolites as longer nails can be used and by the time 12mm plasterboard is dabbed over your capping you are already deeper than your back box, so no chopping in al all,OH HAPPY DAYS

i try to leave the back box about 5mm inside the finished wall, the most important thing is not to have any sticking beyond the plaster as this looks seriously ugly and can effect the flushness of the finished socket.

If it's a plasterboard wall use a fast fix box and be sure to cut the sides back to one sheet of plaster so you can fix back the wings, also if the wall is shared with a neighbour then be sure to install a fire-proof box around the socket, if you can't do this get the chippy or dry liner to do it because it has to be done; it's a legal requirement and if they're is a fire you may be the one who gets in the poo.
