Part P? CPS? Help…..

Hi all,

I am going to fully rewire my house. What do I HAVE to do once I’ve rewired it? I am an approved spark, but do not have part P. Do I need to get an EICR by an a registered company or?

Arrange to have a PartP 3rd paty sparks agree to come round and notify the job for you

I know, but I keep getting conflicting info and do just think I’ll do it a leave it. No one, not even the council seem to care

Which basically boils down to the same thing, except the council pocket a few quid.

You have two choices - the notification route or the scheme route. The latter means employing a spark who's a member of one of the scams, err I mean scheme, to do the work and self certify through his scheme.
As you say you are an "approved" (what does that mean ?), it would seem likely that you will be competent and have the tools to do the installation and test yourself. So you notify your local authority building control (LABC) dept. in advance, do the work, present them with an electrical installation certificate when you're done, and they should just provide you with a completion certificate. You do NOT have to get LABC to inspect & test it - though in practical terms, all they'll do is employ a spark who's a scam member to do any testing, for which you pay anyway.
What may happen is that they start questioning whether you are competent - LABC inspectors, while very helpful in my limited experience, do have something of a reputation for making up their own rules. But as long as you stick to your guns, they should just accept your report. The trick is not to ask in advance - that gives them the opportunity to impose their own rules. Just put in the notice, and if they ask just tell them they'll get an installation certificate.

I turned my garage into a habitable room a couple of years back. This required some new circuits and a CU change. The building work was done under a Building Notice, so I had to ask my LBC what to do about notifying the electrical work, as I was no longer in a Scheme.

In short, they didn't know what to do. They initially accepted my qualifications, then did a U turn and said any work I did, how to have a retrospective EICR to an EIC. I did try the 3rd party certification route, and made contact with two companies, with one agreeing to cert it. But they never materialised into anything. Guess its more hassle than its worth.

In the end, it was simpler to get a company in to do the work etc.

As said, if you do any electrical work, and subsequently sell you property, you will have to provide appropriate certification, which will include a Completion Certificate from your LBC

For I while I was de-scam registered but my local BC continued to accept my printed EICs for work I did and issued the home owners with their completion certificate no problem

how ever the waters are very murky thou when it comes to this area as some BCs seem happy to accept a printed EIC , some won't so then you have to get a 3rd party to do it and some BCs really have no clue what to do when the electrics are finished but notification hasn't taken place

I know some in the past will take an EICR and some won't, I also know a few sparks locally who will notify a job for other sparks but again if they change their mind you can be left in the lurch
